I don't understand why coaches are said to be involved in sponsorship deals at all. Surely that's between the skater and the company doing the sponsoring? Nothing to do with the coach.

In Russia coaches have connections and so it might lead to sponsorship deals. Top coaches are likely to have more. But I believe that it’s not that Eteri didn’t want Alena to have any sponsorship deals, it’s that bad luck with the current crisis. Eteri would have cut 40 per cent of Alena’s gains anyway, why would she have objected?
So I don’t think it’s those non-grata skaters lists - they were never mentioned by Gleikhengauz after all. It could all be down to money.

I guess if she's thinking about money now and after retirement, Plushenko is a good option - he does have connections, doesn't he? Maybe with the combination of her jump coach going there and Plushenko's experience with marketing himself, the move might have made sense to Alyona and her family. Maybe she's counting on her having established her components in her first senior seasons to keep her scores high?

It can be bad luck because Eteri really gains a lot if her students all have good sponsorships deals. But I thought it was a bit strange all of them (Alina, Anna, Sasha) have deals except Alena especially considering she's got everything to get the best deal after Alina (I mean the success in her first senior season, looks etc).

I always felt even when Alena won everything, Anna was favored by the team, mostly by Daniil. Anna got great PR before the World Championships too.

I've read somewhere Nike was supposed to sign the contract with Aliona or Anna and they decided to choose Anna over Aliona because Aliona had been demanding too much and she had been expecting them to give here World ambassador (like Alina for Puma) but I don't know if it's true

I would guess that she doesn't have a good sponsorship deal because she mentioned her plan on retirement after Beijing. I have the impression that large companies tend to make sponsorship deals with athletes that seem to have long competitive careers ahead. The only exception I can think of is Steiff Japan that made a last-minute sponsorship deal with Takahito Mura in December 2017. I don't remember the details, but I think I heard that they decided to support Mura after their CEO and Mura got to know each other through their hobby or something. Not sure how Russian skaters find their sponsors, though.

Anyway, Alena hasn't said anything about this coaching change herself yet. She might have needed Rozanov's help to retrieve her 3A or have other reasons to leave Eteri or Sambo.

That’s mostly hearsay. And there’s an awful load of rumours right now here - some are sickening, to be honest.

One week away from the Planet and....

:jaw:

Wonder how Sasha feels. She probably thought she’d get top dog status and all the attention and ice time at Plushy’s and now one of her biggest rivals comes over.

I see. If that's the case, then yes, I would assume Plush has the better connections for such purposes. That being said, if this were the issue, then why leave so suddenly. Surely this kind of conflict could be handled more smoothly and with official announcements?

My own guess is that Alena realized she'd be stuck playing Medvedeva to Scherbakova's Zagitova in a full repeat of the lead up to Pyeongchang, and that she decided not to go along with it. But there's a lot of other possibilities, from needi g specifically to work with Rozanov on 3A to some kind of triggering incident (ie harassment, etc) having happened. And we'll probably never know for sure which it is.

My hunch is that Eteri found out about Alena having negotiations with Plushenko and threw her out of Sambo70. Why she had to invent non-grata skaters’ lists is another matter.
There are too many contradictions and unknowns in the matter.

I think Alena being expelled for Eteri's pettiness makes sense. And now she has no choice but to go to Plushenko, when before she might have only gone to him for advice. Wow.

Tbh I've always been surprised she hasn't gotten sponsors. Both Anya and Sasha have them and she is just as if not more marketable than them. Alena seems headstrong which is great but when you negotiate you have to expect the other party might walk away.

Kogan:

Quote

Until now, the federation has no documents on the transfer from either Kostornaya or Plushenko, but even when we have these documents and we will consider them, there can be only one solution: Alena will be able to play this season only for her former club - Sambo-70.

Kostornaya's transfer will be considered at the next executive committee of the FFKKR in September.

But I can already say that we intend to follow the existing rules: we cannot prohibit the transitions from coach to coach, we cannot oblige an athlete to work with a specific specialist, but since the transfer window is closed, there can be no transitions from one organization to another.
