ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final 2021, Osaka/Japan – cancellation

Quote

Unfortunately, considering the complicated epidemic situation involving travel restrictions, quarantine requirements, safety concerns and logistical challenges, the organization of the event was extremely challenging. The Japan Skating Federation and the Local Organizing Committee tried their best to find solutions but ultimately concluded that, regrettably, they are unable to organize and hold the event as planned.

The ISU regrets that the hosting of the event is no longer possible in Osaka in December.  The ISU will evaluate a possible postponement to hold the Event at the end of the season and will take a decision as soon as possible. The ISU thanks the Japan Skating Federation for their efforts and cooperation.

RT article:
Threat to Russian figure skating prodigies as Norway makes push for new limit again

Quote

The Norwegian Skating Association (NSA) is bidding to raise the age limit for figure skating with plans that will be considered at the congress of the International Skating Union (ISU) in 2022.

Norway's previous attempt to lift the age limit, which made the congress but was postponed because of the pandemic, will not be revisited because the congress will only debate proposals put forward after December 1 2021.

The leadership of the NSA confirmed to Match TV that it wants to raise the limit to 17 for women and men in all ISU disciplines including figure skating and 16 for dance duets and sports couples.

The changes would be introduced from the 2023/2024 season and would not immediately affect any skater who has already participated at the European Championships, the Four Continents Championships or the World Championships.

Here are comments from Russian specialists.

Evgeni Plushenko

Let it be discussed. We have a leadership for that. I don’t want to get involved in this story. Will this affect many of my students? Well, this means that they will continue to train and perform in juniors.

Sports life does not end there. They should skate for a long time. I am for longevity in sports, not for one-time success – when someone made a splash and ran away. We have a leadership, let them make a decision – this is my position.

How will raising the age minimum affect the results of Russian ladies?

Inna Goncharenko: We still have girls who prove that you can be competitive not only at the age of 17, but also at an older age. And not just compete at a high level, but win and be on the podium at the most important competitions of the season. This is proved by Elizaveta Tuktamysheva.

Therefore, we should not be afraid of raising the age minimum. If this happens, then we will live, work and compete in the conditions we will be put in. Our girls will be definitely fine. They will certainly remain the leaders. We will not give up our leadership.

If they raise the age minimum, it means there will be a longer and tougher competition in junior sports. Junior sports will be more interesting. I hope there will be more attention and interest to it. It’s just that now junior competitions are not as widely covered as senior, they are not so popular. Maybe something will happen in this matter for the better.

For me, for example, it is very interesting to watch Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, who is now a fairly mature athlete, but continues to show excellent skating. She is so mature, so understanding, so different … And I like it more. Therefore, draw your own conclusion whether I agree with the Norwegians or not.

Well, I probably more agree that disagree. But all the same it’s more like conversations in the kitchen, and this, probably, is useless. Who listens? Will it finally come to the deeds? Instead of making statements, the Norwegians should have better created some kind of coalition, got some support from other countries, other associations. If people really want to change something.

Aleksander Gorshkov, President of the Russian Figure Skating Federation

Quote

We have already stated more than once that our federation is categorically against raising the age minimum, and we are ready to argue our position once again.

Why does Norway need it? Let those who propose it answer this. Better ask them.

Tatiana Tarasova

Nothing can stop our girls from winning and skating amazingly. It would be better if the Norwegians tried to prepare someone of their own than to make any proposals.

In Norway, there are no skaters at all, not a single person – what proposals can we talk about? Our girls win and will win at any age, because they are the best.

I won't miss the overscoring and the subsequent media hype of certain skaters that usually happens, but I feel bad for some skaters (Rika and Ryuichi, Kaori, to name a few)-, and it's a bit strange to think about GPF is canceled while other competitions with a lot more skaters like Golden Spin, or Santa Claus Cup with more than 300 competitiors happen these days. But governments act differently and better cancel this than other, much bigger competitions.
