There are multiple reason why this would happen (just my own interpretation of course)

- The corridor: the system is set in a way that encourages the judges to try and predict what the others in the panel are going to score. If a judge is to far off the mean they are flagged and asked to explain their scores (the case of the Chinese judge at the Olympics). If the skater is well known or from a country with reputation for producing good skaters, the the judges will naturally go higher in their prediction and score above what they would do for a skater with less reputation.

-Judges experience: this is mostly relevant with judges that don't judge big competitions often. These judges come with a perceived idea that the top skaters or big federation skaters are the best based on their previous scores, and that added to the first point (the corridor) makes them go higher than they should with their scores. They can also be star struck when judging a very well known skater or a world medalist for the first time

- The ISU and the sport's popularity: (this is definitely is just a theory of mine so take it with a grain of salt) I think the the ISU does try to influence the judges to ensure certain results. For example (hypothetical) if the ISU wanted to revive interest in the sport in the US they would instruct the judges to push the US skaters and artificially create a star, which is what could get people interested. Or they may push for leveling the playing field even if it meant underscoring or overscoring to make competitions more exciting. The feds have power over their own judges but the ISU have power over all judges so it makes senses that they can influence their scores

Conspiracy theories aside, I do believe that the corridor and predicting others scores is the main reason for the problems with PC and GOE. This should not be a thing and judges need to score based on the performance they watched and not on what they think other judges would give, this is the only way to counter the problem of reputation scoring. I don't think the judges are corrupt (some of them maybe) and I do believe that they do this because they love the sport and want to be part of it but there is so much pressure on them from external sources (malicious or not) that is skewing results as well as hurting them and the sport

Also, big federations can have huge influence on small federations. For example Russian fed has much power over other small federations due to having huge numbers of coaches and specialists, even skaters to spare. Some Russians skaters might want to switch countries to get a chance to compete at WC and Olympics, some Europ federations need skaters to represent them, or they can get a deal with Rus fed by sending their skaters to Russia to train for a while etc... big federations have power like that. It’s the same with US and Canadian federations.

Also, sometimes you only need 3-4 judges in the judges panel to help you out and that’s enough. One judge to score the appointed favorites the highest knowing this score will be thrown out, here will come the second and third judges who will score the appointed favorites the second/third highest and these scores will be kept, as the results, the average scores of the certain appointed favorites would be higher.

Aside from all of that, the corridor for judges is too big so it’s easy for manipulation.

Ah-ha! I was wondering why a judge would score so high if it's obvious that it will be thrown out. Of course there will be a team conspiring together.

Somebody faster teach Yuzu to speak better English. I wanna go to the forest too. No eyes for these politics. :snbleh:

So if you ask me, that Chinese judge who got investigated due to scoring so ridiculously at the Olympic, in a way his scores "helped" the US judge who scored ridiculously second. The US judge's scores were kept and she did not get investigated. We will never know what really happened, but I just find the Chinese judge so... weird? Like why did he act that way,  it's easy to be picked up when your scores stand out in such a biased way. It's just not logical.

Which thread should this be in? :thanks:

And also here, I think.

It's a very detailed analysis.

Also, when am I going to be able to recognise the steps, if Zu's the one I am learning from? Too much, too fast. Too beautiful, too distracting. Too overwhelming... In all the good ways.

News is finally coming out about the singles rules, left it in the appropriate thread so you may want to pop by and more will be up soon.

Is it as ridiculous as we feared?! Which of my hypos will end up being our reality?

Yes. Get a drink then come over :13877886:

Okay, well it's the weekend, how many hypos do we need to calculate? I think I had one where BVs went down by 10%. But the problem with tying % to BV, is this: I checked, and after factoring in GOEs, the value between jumps is something about 1.25 the original difference of the BV. Aka, if the BV diff between 4Loop and 4Flip was already 1 pt, after GOE calculations (say +5 GOE for each jump), the difference is now 1.25 pts.  The difference between quads and triples will magnify.

Which is ridiculous because the US judge scored JUST as crazily - I’d argue even more so because her ranking was completely off from the final ranking. But no investigation and of course the entire investigation process into the Chinese judge is opaque - not reported, we have no idea what’s happening.

I’m blown away by the conflict of interest happening with each fed sending their own judges like an arms race toward inflation but that’s just...
