Welcome to our thread for discussing Senior Ice Dance at their GP events of the 2017/18 season!

 

 

Senior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2017/18

 

 

ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating is a series of invitational senior internationals that will run from October to December 2017. We hope to introduce you to all the participants as the events are happening, and we invite you to please come join us in the discussion about them and their achievements as the Grand Prix events unfold!

Skaters are eligible to compete on the senior Grand Prix circuit if they had reached the age of 15 before July 1, 2017. They are also required to have earned either a minimum total score or minimum technical elements scores (TES) at certain international events:

Piper Gilles used to compete for the United States but switched to Canada to partner with Paul Poirier. They won 3rd at this year's Autumn Classic International. Piper has an older brother who competes in Ice Dance and a twin sister who competes in singles, and Paul has siblings who play hockey.

Nicole Kuzmichová and Alexandr Sinicyn placed 9th at this year's Autumn Classic International. Nicole also competed for Slovenia at the international junior level. Nicole was born in Canada but competes for the Czech Republic with partner Alexandr. She recently changed her name from Kuzmich to the Czech-feminine form Kuzmichová. Alexandr's parents also competed in Ice Dance for the Soviet Union.

Marie-Jade and Romain are the 2015 Junior Grand Prix in Spain champions and qualified for the Junior Grand Prix Final. They placed 6th at this year's Autumn Classic International. Marie-Jade Lauriault is a Canadian ice dancer who competes with Romain Le Gac for France, whom she married in 2015.

Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri have won four ISU Challenger Series medals, including the 2015 Golden Spin and the 2015 Warsaw Cup. They are also this year's Lombardia Trophy champions. Marco Fabbri used to compete for France and now competes with Charlène for Italy. Marco was also a medalist in men's singles at the 2007 World Junior Championships before deciding to focus on Ice Dance.

Ekaterina Bobrova / Dmitri Soloviev (Russia)

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev won gold in the team event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. They placed 5th in the individual event. They were the bronze medalists at the 2013 World Championships. They are coached by Alexander Zhulin, the 1994 Olympic silver medalist. In 2016, Ekaterina tested positive for meldonium and was suspended, leading her to miss Worlds, but she was later cleared to compete. They are this year's Ondrej Nepela Trophy champions.

Betina Popova / Sergey Mozgov (Russia)

Sergey is the 2015 Junior World Champion, 2-time JGPF Champion, and Youth Olympics Champion with previous partner Anna Yanovskaya. Betina and Sergey teamed up in 2016. This is their second season together, and their first on the Grand Prix circuit together. They were the bronze medalists at this year's Ondrej Nepela Trophy and placed 5th at Finlandia.

Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin were the 2015 European bronze medalists, the 2013 World Junior Champions, and 3-time medalists on the senior Grand Prix series. Both Alexandra and Ivan used to compete in singles. Ivan Bukin once partnered with Elena Ilinykh.

Alisa Agafonova and Alper Uçar are the 2013 NRW Trophy silver medalists. They have competed in the final segment at eight ISU Championships. Alisa used to compete for the Ukraine and Alper used to compete in men's singles, where he was the 2005 Turkish national champion. They train with Pasquale Camerlengo and Anjelika Krylova in Michigan. The competed for Turkey at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, where they placed 22nd.

Rachel Parsons / Michael Parsons (United States)

The Parsons swept the junior circuit last year and are the reigning World Junior champions and Junior Grand Prix Final champions. They also won gold at four Junior Grand Prix events and six other Junior Grand Prix circuit medals in total. They are this year's Ondrej Nepela Trophy silver medalists. Rachel teamed up with her older brother Michael in 2010. This is their first year on the senior circuit.

Maia and Alex Shibutani are three-time World medalists (silver in 2016, bronze in 2011 and 2017). They are also the 2016 Four Continents champions and four-time Grand Prix series champions. They are also the 2016 and 2017 U.S. national champions. They competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics and placed 9th. They are coached by Marina Zueva and her group in Canton, Michigan. The siblings enjoy taking part in choreographing their own programs and regularly blog/vlog for the USFS. They won the only medal for the United States at the 2017 World Championships.

Sofia Evdokimova and Egor Bazin are the 2017 Winter Universiade silver medalists. They have also won two medals on the Junior Grand Prix series. This season is their second season on the senior circuit.

Shane's brother, Liam Firus, is a World and Olympic-level figure skater in men's singles for Canada. They teamed up only last season and placed 4th at Canadian Nationals. They placed 4th at this year's Finlandia trophy and 5th at this year's US Classic International. Despite being a relatively new team, both have had experience skating competitively with other skaters. They are coached by two-time World medaists Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon.

Tessa and Scott have been a team for over 20 years, making them Canada's longest-lasting dance couple of all time. They are the 2010 Olympic Champions, becoming the first North American team to win Olympic Gold, and the 2014 Olympic silver medalists. They have won 3 world titles and two silver medals. Tessa and Scott currently hold the world record for the short dance score and the total combined score. They are the most decorated ice dance couple in Canadian history. They took two years off after the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and came back in the 2016-2017 season to sweep everything, making them by far the favorites for Olympic gold (once again). They are also this year's Autumn Classic International champions.

Kaitlyn Weaver is a American-Canadian ice dancer who holds dual citizenship and competes for Canada with Andrew Poje. They teamed up in 2006 and immediately won the bronze medal at Canadian Nationals, and then the bronze medal at Junior Worlds. Kaitlyn and Andrew are a two-time World medalist (2014 silver, 2015 bronze), two-time Four Continents champion (2010 & 2015), and a two-time Grand Prix Final champion (2014-2015, 2015-2016). This season, they won the silver medal at the Autumn Classic International. They are coached by Nikolai Morozov.

Joti used to compete in men's singles before teaing up with Kavita to compete for Germany in Ice Dance. Kavita also used to compete in singles as well. Together, they are the two-time and reigning German nationals champions. They have competed in the final segment of 4 ISU championships. They ended their partnership in 2016, but then decided to continue skating together. Kavita and Joti placed 3rd at this year's Nebelhorn trophy.

Natalia and Maksym are two-time Polish national champions and have won two ISU Challenger Series medals. Maksym used to skate for the Ukraine but switched countries to partner with Natalia and skate for Poland. He moved to Poland in 2014 and was granted citizenship in 2016. They are coached by Sylwia Nowak, the 1994 Junior World Champion in Ice Dance. They placed 10th at this year's Finlandia Trophy.

Alla and Pavel are the 2017 Junior Worlds silver medalists, the 2016 Junior Worlds bronze medalists and three-time (2014-16) Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalists. They are also the 2016 Russian national champions. Alla trained in ladies' singles at CSKA Moscow before switching to Ice Dance. They are this year's Lombardia Trophy silver medalists. Pavel's younger sister, Daria, is a competitive ice dancer as well.

Olivia is a British-Spanish skater who competed for the United Kingdom internationally. She was granted Spanish citizenship in 2017. Adria competed with his former partner Sara Hurtado at the 2014 Olympics, becoming the first Spanish Ice Dancers to compete at the Olympics. Adria also once placed 5th at Europeans and won the silver medal at Universiade. Olivia and Adria placed 4th at this year's Autumn Classic International and 7th at the US Classic International. They train in Montreal, Canada.

Kaitlin and Jean-Luc are the 2014 World Junior Champions and the 2013 Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalists. Kaitlin also has two brothers who play hockey. They teamed together in 2012 after both Jean-Luc and Kaitlin first competed in singles. Jean-Luc is also interested in martial arts and has a black belt in taekwondo. In 2015, Jean-Luc suffered a concussion after Kaitlin accidentally hit him with her swinging arm and was off the ice for two weeks. Jean-Luc's mother competed in ice dance at the Olympics representing Great Britain, and his father competed in pairs internationally. They are this year's US Classic International silver medalists.

Madison and Zachary teamed up in 2011. They are the 2014 Four Continents Champions and 4-time US National bronze medalists. They placed first at this year's US Classic International. Madison used to compete with her brother, Kieffer, at the international junior level. However, they ended their partnership when Kieffer suffered from hip and back pain. Madison and Zachary recently moved from Detroit to Montreal to train with two-time World silver medalists Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon.

Hong and Yan are this year's Asian Winter Games bronze medalists and Chinese national champions. They both grew up in the city of Harbin, China and started training together in 2013. They made their Grand Prix debut last year at the Cup of China. Hong and Yan's choreographers include Alexander Zhulin, Marina Zueva, and Massimo Scali.

Shiyue and Xinyu are this year's Asian Winter Games champions and Cup of Nice silver medalists. They also placed 7th at this year's Finlandia Trophy. Shiyue started skating when she was 6 and Xinyu started skating at 4 years old. They began training together in 2013 and represented China at Worlds last year, where they placed high enough to quality one dance team to the Pyeongchang Olympics. They then represented China at the World Team Trophy shortly afterwards. Shiyue and Xinyu's choreographers include Pasquale Camerlengo and Anjelika Krylova.

Xiaotong and Kaige participated for the first time at Chinese Nationals last year, where they placed 4th. They also participated in the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazahkstan, where they placed 13th.

Angelique and Louis teamed up in 2012. Angelique was born in Krasnoiarsk, Russia and Louis was born in Paris. They have represented France at four World Junior Championships, placing in the top 10 three times. They have also won three Junior Grand Prix medals, including a gold and a bronze last year, which qualified them to the Junior Grand Prix Final, where they placed fifth. This is their first senior season. Angelique and Louis started off the season at the Ondrej Nepela Trophy, where they placed 5th, and then at the Cup of Nice, where they played 4th. Currently, they train in Novi, Michigan, with coaches Igor Shpilband and Fabian Bourzat. Fabian Bourzat is the 2011 and 2012 European champion with Nathalie Pechalat. Louis is currently a college student studying engineering.

Gabriella and Guillaume are two-time World champions (2015 and 2016 where they set a world record in the short program), three-time Grand Prix Final champions (2015-2017), and last year's World silver medalists. Gabriella's father is from Greece and her mother was an ice dancer who was part of the couple's coaching team. At the suggestion of Gabriella's mother, Gabriella and Guillaume teamed up when they were 9 and 10 years old respectively. They turned senior in the 2013-2014 season and were sent to Worlds, placing 13th. In 2014, they relocated to Montreal, Canada for training. Gabriella suffered a concussion in 2015 when they had to sit out the first half of the season for her recovery. They started off their season at Finlandia, where they placed first.

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev won gold in the team event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. They placed 5th in the individual event. They were the bronze medalists at the 2013 World Championships. They are coached by Alexander Zhulin, the 1994 Olympic silver medalist. In 2016, Ekaterina tested positive for meldonium and was suspended, leading her to miss Worlds, but she was later cleared to compete. They are this year's Ondrej Nepela Trophy champions.

Jonathan is a two-time World Junior medalist with his former partners Ekaterina Riazanova and Ekaterina Pushkash. Tiffany is originally British and first moved to France to skate for France before teaming up with Jonathan and moving to Russia to skate for Russia. She received Russian citizenship in 2015. In 2012, Tiffany acted in a French comedy detective film as a "Je fais le mort" in the role of a figure skater. Jonathan was born in Austrlia, and his mother once competed in Ice Dance for the Soviet Union. They were once coached by Alexander Zhulin, but switched coaches in May 2017 to Elena Kustarova and Svetlana Alexeeva. They placed 2nd at this year's Ice Star in Minsk, Belarus.

Madison and Evan are two-time World medalists, a two-time Grand Prix Final silver medalists, four-time Four Continents medalist, and the 2015 U.S. National champions. They represented the United States at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where they placed 8th. Madison competed with Greg Zuerlain for five years under Igor Shpilband and Marina Zueva, until Zuerlain retired from competition. Then she started competing with Evan in 2011 and continued to work with her original coaches. With previous partners, they were both World Junior champions.

Lorraine and Quinn are the  2016 World Junior champions, 2015 World Junior silver medalists, the 2015 Junior Grand Prix Final champions, and two-time U.S. Junior National champions. Lorraine started skating at age two-and-a-half and started ice dancing at age 5. Quinn also started skating between 2 and 3 years old. They teamed up in 2005. Quinn was homeschooled before starting college, where he is studying mechanical engineering. They have also won five other Junior Grand Prix events and five other medals on the Junior Grand Prix circuit. They placed 7th at Junior Worlds last year. This is their first senior competition.

Elliana has competed in multiple skating, gymnastics, and dance fields, including singles skating, synchronized skating, ballet, competitive ballroom, rhythmic gymnastics (where she was a regional champion and national-level competitor). Alex played hockey until switching to singles skating and ice dance at age 8; he competed in both singles and ice dance until switching to ice dance full time. Alex is currently a college student studying acting. They placed 4th at the World Junior Championships in 2016 and 4th at U.S. Nationals last season. They placed 4th at this year's Lombardia Trophy. They started skating together in 2014 and are coached by Igor Shpilband and choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne. This is their second senior season.

Tessa and Scott have been a team for over 20 years, making them Canada's longest-lasting dance couple of all time. They are the 2010 Olympic Champions, becoming the first North American team to win Olympic Gold, and the 2014 Olympic silver medalists. They have won 3 world titles and two silver medals. Tessa and Scott currently hold the world record for the short dance score and the total combined score. They are the most decorated ice dance couple in Canadian history. They took two years off after the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and came back in the 2016-2017 season to sweep everything, making them by far the favorites for Olympic gold (once again). They are also this year's Autumn Classic International champions.

Laurence started skating when she was 9 and Nikolaj when he was 7. They are two-time Danish national champions (2014 and 2015). Nikolaj was also the 2010 Danish national champion with another partner. They teamed up in 2012. Both of them enjoy cooking and Laurence also enjoys triathlons. They train in Montreal and are coached by Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, the 2006 and 2007 World silver medalists competing for Canada. They competed in three Challenger events this year, placing 3rd at this year's Finlandia Trophy, 7th at Autumn Classic International, and 4th at US Classic International.

Penny and Nicholas are ice dancers who represent Great Britain. Penny started skating at age 8 and also studied ballet. Her step-father is an ice dancing coach. Nicholas' younger brother is also a competitive ice dancer on the international level. Penny sustained a serious injury to her patella in the 2016-2017 season which required them to miss the whole season. Against all odds, she was able to rehabilitate and return this season, winning gold at the 2017 Cup of Nice and the 2017 Nebelhorn Trophy. Because of their placement at Nebelhorn, they qualified for the 2018 Olympics. This will be their third Olympics, as they also represented Great Britain in 2010 and 2014. They are the 2014 Europeans bronze medalists. Penny and Nicholas will replace Isabella Tobias and Ilia Tkachenko of Italy.

Anna and Luca are the 2014 World Champions, only the second team from Italy to win the World Championships in ice dance. In the same year, they also won the European Championships. They also competed at Worlds seven other times and won three more silver medals at Europeans and one bronze. In 2015, Cappellini married pair skater Ondrej Hotarek, who skates with Valentina Marchei. Anna and Luca competed at the 2014 Sochi Olympics for Italy, placing 6th. They are the six-time reigning Italian national champions. They are also this year's Minsk Arena Ice Star champions.

Misato once competed for Japan on the Junior Grand Prix. Then she switched to compete for Italy with partner Andrea Fabbri, with whom she won five international medals, including silver at a Challenger Series, the 2015 CS Ice Challenge, and gold at the 2015 Bavarian Open. They ended their partnership in 2016, and she started to compete with Timothy Koleto in Milan under coach Barbara Fusar Poli. Immediately, they won bronze at the Japanese National Championships. They placed 8th at this year's Lombardia Trophy. Misato and Timothy got married in January of 2017.

Kana and Chris are the 2016 and 2017 Japanese national champions. They are also the 2017 Asian Winter Games silver medalists. Kana started skating in 1998 and competed in singles up throughout the 2013-2014 season before switching to ice dance. As a singles skater, she won the silver medal at the 2011 Triglav Trophy. Chris used to compete in ice dance with his sister Cathy Reed, and they were seven-time Japanese national champions. Chris also competed with Cathy for Japan at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, placing 17th, and the 2014 Sochi Olympics, placing 21st. Kana and Chris teamed up in 2015 and train in Michigan with coaches Marina Zueva, Oleg Epstein, and Massimo Scali. They competed at the 2017 Nebelhorn Trophy and won the silver medal, securing a spot for at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and a tentative spot for Japan in the Team Event. They also won the bronze medal at this year's US Classic International.

With former partner Ruslan Zhiganshin, Victoria was the 2012 World Junior Champion. With former partner Elena Ilinykh, Nikita was the 2014 Olympic bronze medalist and Olympic gold medallist in the team event. Victoria and Nikita teamed up in 2014, and their former partners teamed up as well. Victoria's father and aunt both competed as gymnasts. Nikita started off skating in men's singles, but struggled with jumps and turned to ice dance. Victoria and Nikita are the reigning Russian Championships bronze medalists. They are also this year's Minsk Arena Ice Star bronze medalists.

Alexandra and Maxim are only the second Ukrainine Ice Dance team to win a medal at Junior Worlds, when they won bronze in 2015. They are coached by Fabian Bourzat, the 2011 and 2012 European Champion with Nathalie Pechalat. Alexandra and Maxim both started skating when they were 5 and teamed up in 2004. Originally, they were both singles skaters from Kharkiv, Ukraine. They are the 2012 Youth Olympics silver medalists and the 2017 Universiade champions. They qualified a spot for Ukraine for the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang. They won bronze at this year's Lombardia Trophy, placed fourth at the Minsk Arena Ice Star, and 5th at the Cup of Nice. Alexandra enjoys music and drawing, and Maxim enjoys collecting insects and skydiving. They stated that their main goal this and last season was the qualify for the Olympics, which they accomplished due to their placement at the World Championships this year.

Madison and Zachary teamed up in 2011. They are the 2014 Four Continents Champions and 4-time US National bronze medalists. They placed first at this year's US Classic International. Madison used to compete with her brother, Kieffer, at the international junior level. However, they ended their partnership when Kieffer suffered from hip and back pain. Madison and Zachary recently moved from Detroit to Montreal to train with two-time World silver medalists Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon.

Isabella used to compete for Georgia and Lithuania. She also danced for seven years with the American School of Ballet. Ilia used to compete for Russia. They teamed up in 2014 to compete for Israel. Isabella represented Lithuania with partner Deividas Stagniūnas in 2014 at the Sochi Olympics, where she placed 17th. With her old partner, they also won a bronze medal at Skate America in 2011. In 2017, Isabella got married to Samuel Lites, who plays hockey for the NHL Detroit Red Wings. With his old partner Ekaterina Riazanova, Ilia won silver at the 2010 Trophée Eric Bompard and bronze at 2012 Skate Canada.

Kaitlyn Weaver is a American-Canadian ice dancer who holds dual citizenship and competes for Canada with Andrew Poje. They teamed up in 2006 and immediately won the bronze medal at Canadian Nationals, and then the bronze medal at Junior Worlds. Kaitlyn and Andrew are a two-time World medalist (2014 silver, 2015 bronze), two-time Four Continents champion (2010 & 2015), and a two-time Grand Prix Final champion (2014-2015, 2015-2016). This season, they won the silver medal at the Autumn Classic International. They are coached by Nikolai Morozov.

Angelique and Louis teamed up in 2012. Angelique was born in Krasnoiarsk, Russia and Louis was born in Paris. They have represented France at four World Junior Championships, placing in the top 10 three times. They have also won three Junior Grand Prix medals, including a gold and a bronze last year, which qualified them to the Junior Grand Prix Final, where they placed fifth. This is their first senior season. Angelique and Louis started off the season at the Ondrej Nepela Trophy, where they placed 5th, and then at the Cup of Nice, where they played 4th. Currently, they train in Novi, Michigan, with coaches Igor Shpilband and Fabian Bourzat. Fabian Bourzat is the 2011 and 2012 European champion with Nathalie Pechalat. Louis is currently a college student studying engineering.

Lorenza and Pierre placed 11th at this year's Cup of Nice, and 16th at this year's Finlandia. They competed in the final segment of the 2016 European Championships. They are the current reigning French national bronze medalists. Lorenza is an Italian ice dancer who used to compete for Italy with partner Simone Vaturi, with whom she placed 5th at the 2010 World Junior Championships. She started to skate with Pierre, and for France, in 2014. Lorenza has expressed interest in becoming a coach and choreographer. Pierre started skating at 4 years old and previously competed with Péroline Ojardias. Together, Lorenza and Pierre have won one senior ISU medal — silver at the 2015 Cup of Nice.

Gabriella and Guillaume are two-time World champions (2015 and 2016 where they set a world record in the short program), three-time Grand Prix Final champions (2015-2017), and last year's World silver medalists. Gabriella's father is from Greece and her mother was an ice dancer who was part of the couple's coaching team. At the suggestion of Gabriella's mother, Gabriella and Guillaume teamed up when they were 9 and 10 years old respectively. They turned senior in the 2013-2014 season and were sent to Worlds, placing 13th. In 2014, they relocated to Montreal, Canada for training. Gabriella suffered a concussion in 2015 when they had to sit out the first half of the season for her recovery. They started off their season at Finlandia, where they placed first.

Charlène Guignard / Marco Fabbri (Italy)

Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri have won four ISU Challenger Series medals, including the 2015 Golden Spin and the 2015 Warsaw Cup. They are also this year's Lombardia Trophy champions. Marco Fabbri used to compete for France and now competes with Charlène for Italy. Marco was also a medalist in men's singles at the 2007 World Junior Championships before deciding to focus on Ice Dance.

Natalia Kaliszek / Maksym Spodyriev (Poland)

Natalia and Maksym are two-time Polish national champions and have won two ISU Challenger Series medals. Maksym used to skate for the Ukraine but switched countries to partner with Natalia and skate for Poland. He moved to Poland in 2014 and was granted citizenship in 2016. They are coached by Sylwia Nowak, the 1994 Junior World Champion in Ice Dance. They placed 10th at this year's Finlandia Trophy.

Alla and Pavel are the 2017 Junior Worlds silver medalists, the 2016 Junior Worlds bronze medalists and three-time (2014-16) Junior Grand Prix Final silver medalists. They are also the 2016 Russian national champions. Alla trained in ladies' singles at CSKA Moscow before switching to Ice Dance. They are this year's Lombardia Trophy silver medalists. Pavel's younger sister, Daria, is a competitive ice dancer as well.

Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin were the 2015 European bronze medalists, the 2013 World Junior Champions, and 3-time medalists on the senior Grand Prix series. Both Alexandra and Ivan used to compete in singles. Ivan Bukin once partnered with Elena Ilinykh.

Madison Chock / Evan Bates (United States)

Madison and Evan are two-time World medalists, a two-time Grand Prix Final silver medalists, four-time Four Continents medalist, and the 2015 U.S. National champions. They represented the United States at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where they placed 8th. Madison competed with Greg Zuerlain for five years under Igor Shpilband and Marina Zueva, until Zuerlain retired from competition. Then she started competing with Evan in 2011 and continued to work with her original coaches. With previous partners, they were both World Junior champions.

Elliana Pogrebinsky / Alex Benoit (United States)

Elliana has competed in multiple skating, gymnastics, and dance fields, including singles skating, synchronized skating, ballet, competitive ballroom, rhythmic gymnastics (where she was a regional champion and national-level competitor). Alex played hockey until switching to singles skating and ice dance at age 8; he competed in both singles and ice dance until switching to ice dance full time. Alex is currently a college student studying acting. They placed 4th at the World Junior Championships in 2016 and 4th at U.S. Nationals last season. They placed 4th at this year's Lombardia Trophy. They started skating together in 2014 and are coached by Igor Shpilband and choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne. This is their second senior season.
