Oh it was a long flight where he didn't. I was a bit shocked. I HOPE he does. I know the Shibs travel in style for the long haul, so why not a national treasure?

Was it for competition? I cannot imagine ANA allowing him to go economy for competition. At least I hope he went econ+ for extra leg room, most economy class seating leg room is horrid for your knees.

News clip of his arrival! Anyone care to translate? :tumblr_inline_n18qr5lPWB1qid2nw:

I don't have my earphones w/ me and I'm rushing to class so I can't hear the newscaster or his words precisely but I think newscaster is just giving general background info on why he's here etc.

He's basically like 'I've come here to do what I (plan?) to do so I want to (skate?) properly.'

About his knee: 'No problem anymore, there's no need to worry. I'm glad I've arrived like this so I'm relieved, first of all.'

About ANA, it's a Japanese airline, so they won't have many flights that aren't Japan related, I think. So I think there will be times when they can't fly him to competitions. And I'm not sure they can offer him flights by other airlines they collaborate with. So at times like that he probably uses the same means as other skaters. (All I know is that Dusseldorf-Barcelona Iow cost flight, though. Or I think it was Barcelona...)

And I thought I remembered it was the competition organizers who covered the travel expenses and yep:

Quote

4.2 Travel Expenses

The Organizing Member will pay travel expenses based on economy airfare rate for all Competitors invited to its ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating event, for all Judges invited as well as the Anti-Doping Control Team, from their domicile to Moscow and return. The travel expenses of the Referees, Technical Controllers, Technical Specialists and the Data & Replay Operators are covered by the ISU. Skaters/Judges, who wish to purchase their air tickets directly or made other individual travel arrangements must first have a confirmation from the Organizing Committee concerning the acceptance of the travel costs. For the all appointed ISU Event Officials , these should have the confirmation of the ISU before purchasing their tickets.

The Figure Skating Federation of Russia is the only authorizing body of airline tickets. All participants must agree to the acceptance of the provided tickets when the invitation is accepted. No reimbursement will be made on any airline ticket issued by any other agency or any other airline unless written permission is received from The Figure Skating Federation of Russia prior to its ticketing.

So if he travels like all the others, it'll be economy... I guess it makes sense in a way, that's a ton of people to seat in first class = a ton of money. But it is surprising.
