Shoma probably needed sleep ASAP and he ran away lol Also his cough during some interviews was a bit of a "are you ok?" so maybe he really just needed a few days home, while Yuzu is basking in the victory. I think it's also possible that he doesn't want to know how bad his ankle is until Olympics are over. Which I kind of get.

I'm sure the top 3 will all be back for the Gala. I'm not sure skipping at the Gala is ever really done? Plus, like it's already been said, he'll want to do it.

And I really want to get into the Yuzu's mentality talk, but I have to get ready for work ^_^;

Yuzu made it to Reddit front page!

Granted, it's due to redditors's arguing over everything under the sun, but hey!

I clicked into it, read a bit, and clicked back out. As a lurker, I don't usually give up that quickly.

Yeah, I couldn't stand more than a few min, but I found it hilarious how they're discussing how beautiful and photogenic they all are

I noticed. And because of you guys I read both of them. :drama:

The people who corrected the casual once every 4 year viewer that it was normal in figure skating are such party poopers lol, like "what wholesomeness, its standard". Lol well I guess fair is fair. They'll find out anyway during the ladies podium.

@meoima and all the others, the quick translation of Plushenko's opinion about Yuzu. I only translated the part concerning Yuzu

"Three years ago, I said in an interview that I preferred Yuzuru Hanyu among current male skaters. A skater who can do anything on the ice. It hasn’t changed since. Just his title has been augmented with ‘two time’

He was looked upon as a favourite in Pyongchang. The problem was whether he’s been able to recover from his ankle injury. Ever since he went back to practising on the ice, his training sessions have been top secret. No one was allowed into the skating rink, and no one knew what form he was in. But the Olympic Games have shown that he recovered completely. He skated brilliantly and won deservedly.

Apart from being talented, he’s also a fighter, though he grew into one. He used to give up when he messed up his elements, he used not to jump up after he fell, but he would spend a second or two on the ice. It even happened at competitions. Now it’s nothing like that. He learnt not to do that.

We first met when Yuzuru was ten. I’ve been taking part in shows in Japan for ages. He came to see our practises and shows. I remember him asking to see his 4Lz he was learning and I helped him with advice.

Athletes who achieved a lot often become arrogant, but Yuzuru is pretty much grounded. He’s a great guy – he’s modest, easy-going, well-mannered. He comes from a middle class family (simple family, having no pretensions), and he isn’t spoilt. I spoke to his parents and they are very nice. They are just as modest as he is.

He’s a hard worker. He’s so dedicated to figure skating that his routine has been ‘home-the skating rink - home’ for years. There has been no changes. Our male skaters lack such commitment and obsession and they waste their time and energy on unimportant things. He’s so disciplined that he doesn’t let himself get out of his routine. He keeps his regime and watches his diet. He’s never drunk any alcohol – and he’s 23, can you imagine that?

I saw him working during the practises for shows. By the way. Neither Japanese nor Americans avoid doing quads there. They learn new quads during their shows – which is unheard of for Russian skaters.

It’s great Hanyu’s bending all the stereotypes. Usually, skaters win the Olympics and finish their career. They try to earn money at skating shows. But he remained after Sochi, and took part at top skating competitions and won in Pyongchang again. As far as I know, he isn’t going to quit even now.

I believe he can win the next Olympic Games in Beijing. He’s got enough motivation and drive for it. He can become a three-time OGM – isn’t it a good enough motivation? I’ve gone through four Olympics, I wanted to beat everyone, and he’s just like me. He’s got that core strength.

And he’s just 23. In his prime. He’s got huge resources with five quads up his sleeve. And his spins! Fast, difficult positions, no travelling. His step sequences are light and exciting. Many skaters just skate through their motions towards the end of their program, but he finishes it at the speed he began with, and he sometimes gets even faster. He just flies across the ice."

Fi... Five...?

???

*me counting* toe, sal, loop, lutz.

Is he already counting Nessie?!

I think your analysis is right... I had the same worry and that's exactly the reason why I kept insisting I'd have been proud of him no matter the color of his medal. I was so scared that he'd look as devastated as in Boston if he got Silver.. I'd have been genuinely proud of him too if he had gotten 2nd or 3rd place because that'd have been worthy of praise and a very impressive achievement due to his condition. But the fact that he managed to get the OGM was an almost superhuman feat, he's beyond incredible and admirable

I think the analysis is right, too, but it's why I absolutely refused to let the alternative even become concrete in my mind, because he had to get the gold. He had to get it because he would do his best, pushing through everything, and that had to be enough. If it wasn't enough, he would have felt as if he wasn't enough after all. So there could be no other outcome, and there could be no hedging of bets. Really, the only thing I could do was believe, blindly, focusing only on the positives. So I did that. Though IRL I'm a cynical, pessimistic, control-freak bint who thinks hope is a big con and it went against everything in my nature.

A very risky and possibly unhealthy attitude from him, of course, letting everything hinge on one moment that's such a wildcard. But I couldn't change his attitude. All that was left was to accept it and believe he'd make it happen. Now I guess I can let myself think 'no matter what happened in that moment, all the other moments make him the greatest ever anyway', but even if I believe that, he wouldn't have. All that matters is that he needed this, and he has it. He's happy. Hopefully now he does what he wants, only because it makes him happy.

If I remember correctly Javi skipped gala at european championships in 2017 because he fell badly during FS.  Not really skipped since he still showed up and talked to the audience but he didn't skate that day. When skaters skip gala they have to pay a lot of money as penalty (I think Yulia once did... not intentionally though). They can skip it when they are badly injured but since Yuzuru was able to skate during competition I don't think they would classify his injury as serious...

I hope Yuzu will have fun at gala. Maybe some nice pairs skater will lift him up and will skate around so Yuzu can rest his ankle :P
