I don't know if anybody's checked out the final standings for the GPF but it's interesting.  The final rankings are Chen, Uno, Kolyada, Voronov, Rippon and Jin.  What's interesting is that even despite his missing the NHK totally Yuzu is still 14th in the rankings, well above Patrick Chan, who bowed out of the GP series also.  He's in 18th.  I think this indicates to me that if Yuzu had done his usual and won the NHK he would probably be entering the GPF this year as the highest-ranked qualifier.  Some consolation for all of us who are missing our Yuzu at a GPF he should have been locking up as his fifth straight title there.  Hopefully next year he'll begin a new streak, and begin it as the current Olympic and World Champions.

Nathan has two first places, so he would have remained as the highest-ranked qualifier. Yuzuru would have been second or third, depending on the overall scores.

The way everything is going, this break from the GPF for Yuzu might be a very, very good thing ultimately. Knock on wood.

Since we're axel obsessed right now, here's a table of Yuzuru's axel evolution.  It's incomplete data since when he started as a novice they still used 6.0. Also, I'm sure I wasn't able to check ALL his competitions. Note that there are times when he's a novice but gets invited to compete for juniors. Also, novice levels only perform free skates.

Interesting notes:

1. He did 2F+2A+SEQ as a novice /LOL/

2. First (that we know) 3A tried in competition at the 2008 Tohoku-Hokkaido Regional FS Championship at 13yo (UR)

3. First  ratified 3A with + GOE in a national competition at the 2008 East Japan Junior Championships at 13yo

... and in true Yuzu fashion, wasn't able to land a clean 3A after that for a while.

4. First  ratified 3A with + GOE in an international competition at the 2009 Junior GP Torun at 14yo

4. First  3A+3T with + GOE in an international competition at the 2009 Junior GP Torun at 14yo

Well... at a Fantasy on Ice 2013 show that wasn't recorded (why????), it was reported that he landed a 4T-3A-3A-3A-1A sequence....

If there was a way to do a 3A-3A-3A combination, he really would do it.
