Dear satellites and friends

March 11th is approaching and it will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. Joining the commemorations, we have prepared a special stream on Saturday 13, 16:00 CEST. Please join us as usual via Twitch  or planethanyu.com/tv

The hashtag we'll be using is #PlanetHanyuCommemorates110311

We would also like to encourage you to donate to charities or projects focused on people in the affected areas and reconstruction’s efforts. The amount doesn't matter and there is indeed some possibilities to help without spending money. Here a few suggestions:

  1. The Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Support Project: Just by clicking on the blue box in the middle of the page on https://clickdonation.psc-inc.co.jp/page/east_japan/, PSC will donate 3 yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society's Great East Japan Earthquake Donation Fund. You can do this everyday!!
  2. Also on March 11th (from 0:00-23:59, Japan time), Yahoo Japan and LINE will have a joint charity promotion whereby 10 Yen will be donated to earthquake disaster funds if you do a search by typing "3.11" on https.//www.yahoo.co.jp
  3. Since March 2011, the Japan NPO Center in collaboration with the Civil Society Initiative Fund, has been operating the Japan Earthquake Local NPO Support Fund, which is used by local nonprofits in affected Tohoku area that need relief and recovery aid (information available in English). The group has a specific link for donating for Tohoku disaster recovery also using Paypal. You will find the link button ("Donate to Japan Earthquake Local NPO Support Fund") when you scroll down this website: https://www.jnpoc.ne.jp/en/how-to-contact-us/donation/
  4. The Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery Initiatives Foundation primarily helps young children and youths affected by the disaster. They confirmed they accept donations by wire transfers or credit cards through their website, but the donation's currency needs to be in Yen. Bank account details and credit card donation details can be found on  www.minnade-ganbaro.jp/shien/donation/ (information available only in Japanese, we'll try to provide a little bit later a translation and guidance how to donate).
  5. If you are interested in supporting children, there is also The MICHINOKU Future Fund. Its focus is on those who lost their parent/parents in the disaster. Here is their English site: http://michinoku-mirai.org/en/index.html

  6. The NPO Riku Café was set up in 2012 to promote activities for mental and physical well-being in the community mainly targeted at the elderly. To find out more about their purpose and activities: http://rikucafe.jp/about-english

Please feel free to reply in this thread if you have any other suggestions!

:thanks:

Thank you so much for sharing the info regarding projects supporting affected people and the areas. As a Japanese, I am grateful that you've been doing this in this time of difficulty.

Let me make a few suggestions on these options:

If you consider donating via Japan NPO Center, these links may also be useful:

The first one has info regarding the projects related to Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami and a direct link to the PayPal page.

The second one has links to more information and reports.

I have been making small donations via this organization since 2012 to a program supporting high school students affected by the disaster. I think this organization is trustworthy. They are sharing a detailed report every year. You can also read and hear the support recipients' comments and get an idea of who you are supporting and how. However, their website is not friendly to non-Japanese speakers, and as it is ramified and multi-layered, it may be hard for translators to translate it until March 11 or 13. I think this option is for Japanese speakers because this is an actual monetary donation, and it is essential that you are being able to know everything about the organization and the project before donating.

If you are interested in supporting children, there is also The MICHINOKU Future Fund. Its focus is on those who lost their parent/parents in the disaster.

Here is their English site :68271262:

Anyway, thank you always for caring :thanks:

As it is indeed a difficult time, everyone, please take care of yourselves as well and stay safe!

This is a very thoughtful project and reminded me of a comment from someone who lived in one of the affected areas.

In 2019, Japan House in collaboration with Japan’s Reconstruction Agency invited an NPO from Rikuzentakata to talk about their organisation and activities. One of the founders of the NPO said (paraphrased) – despite all the reconstruction of the past 8 years, the rebuilding of the community was just beginning. She expected it would take even longer and was more challenging due to mental fatigue, people never returning to the area or outsiders “forgetting”.

The NPO, Riku Café, was set up in 2012 to promote activities for mental and physical well-being in the community mainly targeted at the elderly. To find out more about their purpose and activities:

PS: some of you may recall having seen a photo of a single pine tree surviving the destruction of the tsunami, this area was the nearby city of Rikuzentakata.

I found two articles about the pine tree  and the city of Rikuzentakata that I would like to share with you all.

The first one is from Mainichi Japan, December 8, 2019:

The second one from the Wall Street Journal, published two days ago:

Thanks.  FYI: you can't actually read the full WSJ article without a subscription (which has annoyed me on multiple occasions).

Oh, you’re right! I guess the first day you could read it for free? :( What a pity!

Anyway, today I want to share this article from Kyodo News about Yuzu in connection with the disaster:

thank you so much @Yuzu_legend and whole team for this and the care in putting everything together :10742289::10742289::10742289:

thank you @sweetwater and @mambook for also adding more info and opportunities for donations <3

as for more suggestions, I can only think about Yuzuru's bios, royalties are still being donated to Ice Rink Sendai, right?

Though it's not specific for Earthquake recovery, so maybe it should be left out. But in case, worth also mentioning how to get english fan translations too.

Virtual hugs everyone, stay safe and take care :grouphug:

Thank you so much to the Planet Hanyu staff who put together the information on how to support the recovery efforts. I enjoy supporting Yuzu in many ways, including attending competitions when I can. But donating to the relief efforts felt extra special. It's not something I would have thought to do if I weren't a fanyu, and I'm sure I'm one of countless fans around the world who could say the same. So truly his efforts to lift up the needs of those still suffering have made a tremendous difference. I hope he can feel that somehow. What a privilege to have him as an inspiration!
