Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2020/21

The 24th season of a series of junior international competitions organized by the International Skating Union.

Following the cancellation of the first two Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Events that were to have been held in Canada and Slovak Republic, the Council approved the application from Riga / LAT to host a Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Event.

The revised ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series will therefore be as follows:

Date Event  Location Other Notes
September 9-12 JGP Hungary Budapest / HUN
September 16-19 JGP Japan Yokohama / JPN Cancelled
September 23-26 JGP Czech Republic Ostrava / CZE + Pairs
September 20-October 3 JGP Uzbekistan Tashkent / UZB + Pairs
October 7-10 JGP Slovenia Lljubljana / SLO
October 14-17 JGP Latvia Riga / LAT + Pairs

Skaters who reach the age of 13 by July 1, 2020 but have not turned 19 (singles and females of the other two disciplines) or 21 (male pair skaters and ice dancers) are eligible to compete in the JGP. The number of entries allotted to each Federation is determined by their skaters' placements at the 2020 World Junior Championships and the Federations themselves choose their representatives.

Skaters/Couples entered for an event of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating may not participate in the same discipline of an event of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating (senior) in the same season.

Points are awarded based on placement in an event.

First place in singles brings 15 points, second 13, third 11 points, fourth 9, fifth 7, sixth 5, seventh 4, eighth 3, ninth 2 and tenth 1.

First place in pairs and ice dance brings 15 points, second 13, third 11 points, fourth 9, fifth 7, sixth 5.

Top 6 ranking in all disciplines will qualify for the JGPF.

I don't know if we'll have a JGP Season and if yes, in what form...but I have opened a new thread with the informations about competitions and technical details as of now because we always open a thread around this time of the year! ISU will give us more information regarding the JGP after the meeting of Council on 6th July.

Does that put paid to the JGP series? Or will they scramble to find yet another European/Central Asian harbour?

Technically, I tend to think a reduced JGP (and GP too) could be maintained with as little as 3 trophies and the final, accepting 8 finalists for instance for each category, and with only one assignment allowed per skater.

If only successful South Korea (4CC without contamination + whole management of the epidemic) could manage to hold additional events... I know it wouldn't be easy but it would make an Eastern Asian location.

idk how they can even make JGP work if skaters won't be free to travel internationally by then, and without mandatory quarantine...

it's true that right now Europe isn't the worst hit continent anymore and is lifting some travel restictions within its borders and to/from some Countries, so I could see e.g. European skaters travelling within Europe to attend a JGP (of course, if current situation holds).

(I'm not familiar with situation in Uzbekistan, where the only non-european JGP is being held)

But skaters from other continents still need to be able to cross borders, or they'll de-facto be excluded from JGP and not by their own choice

Have all the skater build their own individual skating rinks to quarantine in and let them spend two weeks after travelling to JGP events there.
oh, and provide every single skater at the event with their own skating rink too.
this is just mental.

I think it is possible to have a contest if "special quarantine rules" are accepted, with assigned hotel, secured transfers and a rather normal practice.

And risk would be virtually zeroed if in addition to this, people could be admitted into this regimen only if their predictive biological data are good (C, D and K vitamins, T-cells).

These quarantine rules are for a good reason. Bending them would endanger health or even life of many people. No practice possible outside what you can do in your room. After 2 weeks like that no athlete is in shape to compete.

Besides, bookmarking hotel for 3 weeks for around 130 skaters + their coaches + other memebers of their teams + ISU officials? Sounds hard to do.

Now what do we do if there are no competitions until 2021? Any ideas?

Well, Japan still wants to do regionals and sectionals (without audience). We will get only protocols, but that will be probably the most exciting events in next few months.

what is worse, to know that nothing happens or to know *something* happens but you don't get to see it?

Well, of course this is the dilemma of FS-deprived audience, skaters would certainly prefer to be able to compete.

But maybe media could be so nice to give us some more crumbs than usual. I don't ask for anything diffficult, just one fixed camera placed in one corner that shows the rink:sigh:
