  1. I used to like watching competition more because all skaters are simply more serious in comps. Most of them have weak and/or haphazardly choreographed programs when it is for a show, not competition.

Yuzu isn’t like that, thank God. And so, while I do miss his competitive days, I like where he is now.

especially because his private life is none of our damn business.

    This, so much this.
I am just thankful that he is willing to share everything he has shared with us so far. I already feel beyond privileged. He keeps his private life private. For everything else of his that he has shared, I feel obliged to respect this decision to keep some parts of him away from the public. It’s the least I could do.

I, too, will continue to be this salty. Zu is a great champion, and since it was him that was hurt, being the bigger person means he forgives and forgets.

Not me. I will remember and hold all the grudges. But I will also enjoy this tribute, not for who the tribute is actually for, but for who Zu is.

I remember Marin had pink blades and Evgenia had rose-gold blades at one point. A few other men besides Yuzu have black blades.

A skater friend of mine contemplated getting black blades when she needed new ones, but she said the scratches show up clearly on black blades. She saw others with black blades and she said they looked worn out quickly, so she decided to stick with silver blades.

I really like the black blades and they look fabulous on Yuzu! With his great technique, Yuzu doesn't put as much stress on his boots, so he probably doesn't have as much problem with scratches on his blades either.

Oooh, there you go. I thought the plating would be high enough quality to not peel off with scratches, but I guess it’s not. But yep. If other skaters do not have the same technical level as Yuzu, the scratches on their coloured blades would be one reason to go back to silver blades.

The ladies? Mai and Marin from the top of my head. Gold blades are more popular. I just can't stand both.

Color aside, Yuzu's blades are top notch quality wise.

And they have them just for one season, I think? Yeah, me too. The black blades for black boots make the most sense, imo. Idk if black blades will also work for the ladies white/tan boots - I’d imagine they won’t.

For a custom blade, you don't need to change the kind of blade you use. I read somewhere before that John Wilson (the brand Yuzu uses) offers color customization. (Apparently others do too since Jin Boyang doesn't appear in the John Wilson website). And from there I thought wouldn't it be nice if skaters used blades that matched their costumes 😂😂😂 Obviously this is purely wishful thinking. Blades need time to break in, they're not like ordinary shoes we just swap around.

Blades…do not need time to break in…. The boots do, but not the blades. The blades got dull after awhile and needs sharpening - Yuzu, for example has this person in Sendai who does the sharpening of his blades for him. And I mean, men skaters wear black boots, and black blades just looks way cooler paired with black boots.
My point re type of blades vs colour of blades is that when it comes to his technical equipments, Yuzu prioritises function over flashiness. He might want to get rid of the silver in his Pattern 99 Revolution blades, and he could go for gold plating, I guess, but he ultimately went for all-black.

This is Yuzu we're talking about. Even his blade covers have sequins! :animated-smileys-character-075:

There’s a difference between having blade covers with sequins and having flashy blades that probably would not have functional purpose. The boots and blades of skaters are their technical equipments. Yuzu would never compromise the functions of either just to be flashy. His blades, afaik, are the type that is the most sturdy as well as the lightest, aimed to increase the effectiveness of his jumps. Boyang Jin’s gold blades (and there was a ladies skater who had pink blades, but I can’t remember who), were not this type.

Unrelated, but I want to appreciate Yuzu's old black and silver blades. The blades he currently uses are all black (customized with his name).

Also, apparently you can order custom-colored blades. How come most other skaters I've seen use only the silver one?

    12363202_1024705620884557_76753802843314

…they are expensive. Very few skaters would go for this, especially if they are not well-funded. Skaters as prominent as Yuzu could have this requested because it’s an excellent marketing strategy for the brand. Most skaters also keep multiple boots-blades with them and having to order multiple custom pairs of blade is just not worth it (someone like Yuzu, who takes extra diligent care of his skating equipments is rather rare).
Awhile ago, Yuzu got rid of any silver on his person when he is on the ice, including his blades, hence the now all-black blades.

It's crazy how Yuzu keeps evolving. Just when I think he can't get better he does. This layout is really just bonkers and the fact that he did it in one take so flawlessly is just amazing.

    There’s a 3Lo after the 3A2T combo. He jumped 8 jumping passes.

    —-

(I had to slow down to count his 4S, cz I thought it was a triple at first. Looked too easy.)

In the past there was a tendency among sections of the fandom to infantilise him - I’m thinking of all those people pre Planet who were so certain that leaving lovely Nanami Abe to go to Toronto was a dreadful mistake, that Parisan was a horrible programme, that he should stay in his comfort zone in Japan etc etc.  Hopefully we’ve all moved past that sort of attitude.  We ought to know by now that he knows what he’s doing.
We all hate it when bad things happen to him - until the series of greatest hits practices from Beijing came through I couldn’t bear to watch footage from those games.  But he’s much braver and more resilient than we are.  If he’s doing SOI he’s got his reasons.  Maybe he’s assessing who he might be able to use/work with in his own projects.  Maybe it’s a nice useful big fat cheque that can cover certain expenses.  It’s going to be interesting to compare audience numbers with the other SOI stops.

    Yep.

I am kinda "hmmm..." and "????" about fanyus who, idk how to put this better, feel like we have the power to protect Yuzu (and have collectively failed in the past and therefore should do better). Don't do that to yourself. Learn what you can and cannot do. Yuzu certainly has only ever asked us to support him. Don't overextrapolate this to mean that we have to protect him. It's not our job, and it is quite literally not in our hands. You'd only feel powerless - cz it's not in your power - and this will make you prone to reactionary upsets every time things like this happen. And seriously, he is 28 years old, not some hot-headed 18 yo (even then, he did have adults in his life who are responsible for his well-being, and those adults were not and still are not us - some of us aren't even adults, let's be real). This is getting ridiculous. Even if this participation in this other ice show is something he had to do because of, idk, contract or whatever, he is now a professional. Fulfilling a contract is what professionals do, would you believe it.

    The passing of a friend

It is with sadness that I share that our fellow Satellite @Muffinator passed away early yesterday morning (USA time) after a battle with an aggressive cancer.  She had mentioned this illness on her profile last year. Some of you may remember her as spearheading a letter campaign last year where she showed tremendous determination in advocating for fairness in FS judging. Those of you who were part of the campaign can vouch for her strong organizational skills, her logical approach and leadership.    Muffinator was a deeply introspective person, and we would often chat about really existential-level Yuzu things.  She was never afraid to speak her mind both on this forum and in private. Her views were interesting and unusual.

She was a devoted Fanyu and found so much joy in watching Yuzu's performances. Even during her illness she often remarked at how watching Yuzu's skating would take her away from the pain, even if it was for a short time. She was able to loose herself in his performances. Looking at Yuzu's photo books also served as a joyful distraction from her suffering. I know she was so grateful for Yuzu's comforting power.  She leaves behind her devoted husband and teenage boy.

My deepest condolences,, may you rest in peace, @Muffinator

  12. The costume, Zu... never change, lol

The 4A without harness, unfortunately, is still <<

I do feel ike this is a goodbye of some sort to that pursue. It was a worthwhile pursue, but it's not the end-all-be-all. Zu's skating is so much more than just his jumps, even if I do have the softest spot for his delayed single Axel.

So, this is me after wiping the floor dry of my tears, thanking him for such a gift.

    Happy holidays, satellites!!

Wait, did they count Scotland (and Wales and Northern Ireland) as separate from England?

    First of all, bless them!

Second of all, I am in Scotland! Can I be counted to represent Scotland?

Oh, they definitely are the one being 'interviewed'. Yuzu was evaluating their journalistic practice, which he can now do freely. Only real journalists get access to his future endeavor.

I am totally guessing, but I hope that's what he is doing.
