  1. I agree. In 2013 Yuzu was only listening to Patrick while he spoke during press conference, but now he can respond to Patrick’s comment in English. Besides, nowadays many skaters competed in Sochi had r****d. Yuzu and Patrick are both treated as a veteran. This might help them (mainly Patrick) feel relatable to each other.
  2. Yes, that's the one  I found the of the event where he commented on cats (from 2:45-)In previous part of the event everyone showed a picture of the thing which made their heart throb. Airi Matsui showed a picture of little kids, Tao Tsuchiya showed a picture of her skiing, Suzu Hirose showed a picture of her beloved dog, and Yuzu showed his earphones. Yuzu’s comment here was a reaction to Suzu’s picture. Rough translation of his comment: Yuzu: I love watching dogs and cats… in my case especially cats, so I kind of got her feeling. Interviewer: The way cats meow make your heart throb? Yuzu: Yes. Now we can find so many photos and movies of them on internet, and they make my heart throb and make me want to have one myself. ETA: Oh sorry this has already been shared
  3. Welcome! Glad you joined us :pbow: I just had a random thought..... is Yuzu a cat or dog person? I am leaning more towards cat person, I mean he himself is a space kitten Cat person. At Ghana event last year he said he’d love to keep a cat, but he can't. So he watches cat videos ^^ Also this: (picture from google images) I remember some fans started showing off their cat to him on twitter after the Ghana event. I don’t know if he saw them but I enjoyed the fest as a cat person myself.
  4. I became his fan when I saw his senior debut in NHK Trophy 2010. I was a casual figure skating fan back then, who would watch competitions when they were broadcasted on TV and knew nothing about junior circuit. However, I had known him as I had seen the news of his winning JGPF2009 and WJFC2010. Knowing that he had been admiring Plushenko and Johnny as his idol I had been looking forward to seeing his performance since the end of previous season, because after seeing Vancouver, to see someone skate with most difficult jumps (like Plushenko’s) and nice flow (like Johnny’s) was my dream. But the autumn of 2010 was very busy. I had some time consuming jobs in my hands and one of my family was sick, so I didn’t know anything about competition schedule and tuned on the TV just by coincidence right before his name was called by the PA announcer. I thought, “Oh no, it’s NHK Trophy!” and then, “Oh yes, it’s him!” Last time I saw him, he was just another skater boy bowing to the audience in frilly costume, but this time he was in a costume which reminded me of snowstorm in the night, and he started moving to the sound which also reminded me of the coldness of the snow. In the first few seconds I became his fan. In White Legend he first glides toward judges, looking them in the eye, moving his arms gracefully as if they were his wings. To me it looked as if a declaration that he was a swan and going to make everyone believe it. I loved his boldness as a performer. Then he landed a beautiful 3A like nothing. I got so excited and believed that he really would become the skater I dreamed of. After that many things happened. The meaning of the program had changed and the way I watch figure skating had changed in the course of events. However, I think I was lucky that I could see that performance, and his performances afterwards which were my dream came true. H&L this year was something beyond my dream. I’m really looking forward to see what he is going to try next.
  5. Thank you for sharing. It was very interesting. I love PJ’s interview because she is always warm and good at bring out interesting answers from interviewees. I wanted to hear more about his 4A attempt though…
  6. From google trans, lol correct me if I am wrong but it seems like the magazine ask Zhenya if she likes Hanyu??? Lolol please Japanese native speaker answer this. :rofl2: She dodged though. The other stuff seems like old stuff where she said he is inspirational, the best etc etc. Roughly translated the first part of the interview (after that is more about herself.) Sputnic: How does Hanyu inspire you? Why do you want to skate with him? Zhenya: He inspires me as an athlete. Today many skaters see him as a role model. He is peerless as an athlete and no one would question that. Sputnic: On internet we can find many photos of you two together. Don’t you like him not only as an athlete but also as a young man? Zhenya: I don’t want to answer such question. I’ve made friends with many skaters from many countries in the first place. They are from the USA, Japan, China, Korea, France, Philippine… almost everywhere in the world. We all get along with each other really well. In competitions, we try to spend good time together because we don’t have much time to get together. Basically we talk in English. Sometimes we get together in someone’s room and have a chat or watch movies and videos. ETA: This site is more like a Japanese branch of this news site than a Japanese media.
  9. 1. 9 IIRR. Art on Ice x 2, Dreams on Ice x 4, Fantasy on Ice x 3 2. There are 4 DOI shows planned, so with 9 FaOI it'd made total of 13 shows. Art on Ice consisted of 4 shows, so in 2013, he participated 11 shows in total.
  10. Yay! Yuzu will be in Fantasy on Ice! I think it’s a good news because it means he’s healthy enough to make such decision. I’m going to Makuhari, and looking forward to seeing him in a show for the first time in a while. As for TV coverage, Fantasy on Ice Kobe will be aired by Asahi or BS Asahi for sure, because their name is on the list of organizers of Kobe shows. (source) You can read it there in a more detailed explanation to why I said height is what matters the most in determining airtime, and though speed may help, it affects very little to the total airtime. Skaters with not enough height that can complete the rotation necessary usually would : either pre-rotate or rotate considerably faster. Thank you for the link! I will read it later.
  11. Oh no that one was correct, I thought you were asking whether small jumps are harder to control than higher jumps. Though I would also argue even if that is the general understanding, it is not always the case. I'd say Mao's jumps are pretty high but sometimes does not really have the distance but some other skaters who has more distance than height (like Satoko) would be much better and more consistent to control their axis, so it is not only dependent on height and distance when you are talking about the ability of a skater to maintain their axis. I think generally, when comparing between 2 huge jumps, those who have more distance would have the tendency to go off-axis more than those who jump high but barely travels. Sorry, my point was rather unclear in my first post. After seeing I’ve been concerned about how they would control the momentum while landing 4A, because making full rotation would require huge momentum, so I simply thought that if the skater has enough height=air time, it might give him/her enough time to loosen up and prepare for the landing. But yes, there are many factors other than height and distance…
  12. I actually think higher jump is much harder to control due to the possibility of getting yourself thrown off-axis (that also becomes higher). You can see this mostly with skaters who jump huge but do not have really "tight" air position like gabby daleman, midori ito for example. Their jumps are huge but wild. It is easier to control smaller jumps and become more consistent of landing it. Satoko and zhenya are consistent but their jumps are not necessarily huge too. Takeshi Honda often says that jumps with speed and distance is more difficult than higher jumps because the former has more momentum going into the jump than the latter and the momentum makes it difficult to maintain your axis (I guess it pulls you backwards…not sure though.) The jumps of Gabby and Midori look very high and wild sometimes but they also have speed and distance, aren’t they? I saw Gabby’s 3T-3T in WTT and it was huge in terms of distance too. It almost covered the length of the short side of the rink, like Han Yan’s 3A. I think whether you can maintain the tight axis or not is more crucial than whether your jump is high or not. (I edited the "tight air position" to "tight axis" because it was a mistake) Skaters either jump very high (like many skaters in the past like Plushenko, Petrenko...) or very far Yuna Kim. If you look at some old-fashioned skaters like like Voronov or Gachinski, they still jump high like in the old day. Look at his 3A here: Jumping high is talked to help you maintain your axis very well. So if you want to stay straight in the air and not off-axis, jumping high might help. Maybe that's why Plushenko rarely messed up because he jumped high, not too far on the ice though. Nathan also jumps high, but the distance is not impressive. However, when you jump that high, you have to cut the distance. Their jumps might be high, but the distance might be less than some later generation like Patrick, Yuzuru, Han Yan. These guys jump very far across the ice. Patrick, Yuzuru have both the height and the distance in their jumps (Javi only has height and distance in the quads, his triples are meh). Especially, Yuzuru, he can jump higher 3A or longer 3A if he wants to. The 3A we are seeing Yuzuru doing today are not the best 3A he can do. Because all of his 3A now are performed in the second half of the program, out of difficult transitions and in combo. And those 3A of Yuzuru are already huge. If you want a huge 3A from the beginning, without difficult transitions, with crazy height and distance, certainly Yuzuru can do it. He just does not do it. So I have no doubt he can even perform bigger 3A than he is doing now. Thank you. Now I can understand more clearly about the relationship between height and distance. I’ve heard someone said that jump in figure skating is physics, and your post reminded me of law of conservation of mass. As for Yuzu, seeing his last jump in 4CC FS, yes, he can perform huge 3A even without much preparation.
  13. Interesting. Higher jump will give you more time to control your momentum and land safely on one feet, maybe?
  14. 興福寺の阿修羅像は実物がすごく可愛かったので、「フリルを着た阿修羅」という描写は割とそのままだなと思っていました :rofl2:
  15. Happy one week anniversary! Thank you for admins, mods, and everybody who created this place. :goe:  And thank you all for updates! Good to know that Yuzu is now back in Toronto. Hope he has a great off-season. MCM was the first skater who landed 3A in his country, wasn’t he? Maybe he has a special passion for Axel jumps like Yuzu does. I saw Artur Dmitriev’s attempt few years ago, and Yuzu and Mura’s attempts in 2014. But I haven’t seen any attempt which didn’t look scary. Seeing Yuzu landing beautiful 4A is my dream, but I hope he will head for his goal very carefully.
  16. 17. ETA: solved Yes, thank you, I saw the Twitter link! Is were a full video on YT in good quality? What show is this? The Ice 2012? Unfortunately I don't have the link but yes, it's a footage from The Ice 2012. First one is here (see from 11:26) I think I’ve seen the other one too, but can’t find the link now.
  18. Yuzu and Mura attempted 4A after finale of Dreams On Ice 2015, though both 4A were < with fall I think. Their attempt was aired so there must be a footage somewhere on internet too.
  19. Etude is indeed underrated. It definitely deserves more votes than Vertigo! The drama of the music and the choreography really suited Yuzu at that age (Nanami knew how to choreograph to his strengths) and this is one of my favorite costumes of his. It's one of those programs that I enjoy very much but which I don't love as much as the others because I prefer the music of his other programs. I just watched his 2011 COR and GPF performances of Etude and I am again equal parts pitying and laughing at those who critiqued his posture in his older performances. How sad that they cannot appreciate the articulation of his torso, how he uses contraction and release to add drama to his upper body movement to match the music. He uses this bending forwards and backwards over his core to emphasize the extension of his arms to skate very big consuming the space around him one moment and then very small and light the next transforming forcefulness into delicacy. This kind of movement with variety in space and weight with flow centered around a strong core- the limbs, upper torso and head moving as satellites in many trajectories around the center- this is the aesthetic of modern/contemporary dance. Another program I enjoy very much and could have really loved but for one section right before the hydroblade where I thought the choreography was a bit repetitive and empty (sorry Mr. Miyamoto but how many turns with arms in ballet 4th do you want him to do!). His Boston performance of Requiem was IMO, his best showcase of his musicality thus far because he was so emotionally invested in it that he improvised many of the details in the latter part of his performance. And his improv was so much more beautiful and moving than the actual choreography from previous performances :crybaby:  :goe:  to your opinion about Etude. (though I didn’t voted for it) I’m jealous of you for having seen this program live! Now he is much stronger and polished than those days, but I still love many of his performances in that season.
  20. I feel that I heard so too. Off-topic but I love the way everyone's smiling in spectators' seat. Thank you for sharing.
  21. Thank you for sharing sweetwater Is Yoshida-san is Nanami Abe's husband or I'm just getting mixed up? Yes, Yoshida-san is Nanami-sensei's husband. Hello, yukako23. Welcome to this forum! As to how to use this forum, you can also post your question in Japanese speaker's thread. Please enjoy your exploration!
  23. Hi xXSugarHoneyXx, welcome to the forum! English is not my first language either but people here are very kind about that so don't worry and please post often!
  24. Hi, Étudeesque! Glad to see you again! (Thank you also for the reply on GS. Congrats for the essay!) Good to know that you could finally log in!
