  1. Does anyone here speak Italian and could help me find an ice rink in or around Milan, Italy that will have public skate sessions between Sep. 10 and 17, 2023? I googled and found one, which seemed closed for good.
  2. Thank you! You're making me even more excited for both reasons - Yuzu not going to be bullied/used/manipulated anymore, and the possibility of seeing him skate. The moment I learned about this high-powered law firm representing him, I knew better days are ahead of him and, in turn, us as his fans.
  3. Now not just Nikkan Sports, even Washington Post by Associated Press, Mainichi Japan, and Kyodo News are reporting he's expected to announce retirement. I don't know what their sources are. It will be interesting if it turns out to be something else.
  4. 5pm Japan time = 7.5 hours from now. Edit: Nope. It's a bit less than 8.5 hours from now. 4am Eastern Standard Time. 10am in Europe.
  5. Does anyone know when ISU normally releases assignments for the new season? "When" as in the time of the day.
  6. Just saw a video interview of Narumi Takahashi. I could only understand a small part of Japanese in the interview. I wish there were English translation as it seems relevant for what I've been struggling with. If any of you could understand what she says in the interview, could you post the gist of her points?

Just sent 30 euros to [email protected] via PayPal to celebrate Planet Hanyu's anniversary. Thank you all for making it such a wonderful home and community. Happy Anniversary!!!
  8. Happy Anniversary!!! 1. When did you become a fan of Yuzu? Right before PyeongChang. I read a New York Times article about Yuzu, and then started watching his old programs and of course the Olympic Games shortly after. I didn't even realize I had become a fan of Yuzu. I just keep watching his programs and wanting to know more about this incredible person to this day. 2. When and why did you sign up for Planet Hanyu? I signed up for Planet Hanyu on March 10, 2018 when I discovered the website. Why? It instantly felt like home. It still does. 3. Did you make any irl friends through Planet Hanyu? Yes. I was very excited to meet other satellites in person at competitions. Some of us roomed and/or dined together and the friendship remains. 4. Have you participated in any group projects on Planet Hanyu? Yes, if the following are considered "group projects on Planet Hanyu." 1. I wrote a message to Yuzu a couple of times as part of the collections satellites here organized to send to Yuzu. 2. I made a banner with the national flag of my country for ACI 2019 (if I remember correctly) to show we love Yuzu from all over the world. 5. Did you attend any meetups with other satellites at competitions? I met satellites in small groups at all competitions I attended so far - ACI 2018 and 2019, GP Helsink 2018, GPF 2018 (even though Yuzu withdrew), and SCI 2019. 6. What do you like the most about this forum? There are so many kind and talented people here I just feel a sort of warm glow when I'm here. I also like how people use their expertise and knowledge, which have helped me learn a lot. It's a great community. When I go to competitions, meeting friends I made through the forum is always exciting. Having this home base also makes drought seasons easier to endure, not to mention the streaming parties, which are great fun to be a part of. 7. Would you like to participate in the giveaway? Yes, please. Thank you very much for doing this!!
  9. It's great that you're making good progress with not much time on the ice. I normally need several hours of practice for every half an hour of coaching session before I feel ready to see my coach again to receive her feedback or learn new things. Do you do off-ice training/practice? Sometimes I have an ah-ha moment by following along or even just watching videos like this one below, which reminds me something my coach told me but just didn't register before. I really like this whole playlist by the way.
  10. Did you go skating in front of the big tree? I was planning to go back to Chicago over Christmas but decided to cancel the trip because of Omicron. Very glad to have been there before Thanksgiving. I have a question for all of you who go to public skate sessions: Does your local rink have any policy against practicing freestyle? My local rink (the only one in town) prohibits one-foot skating, jumps, and spins during public skate. Spirals are out of the question, but even edges are something the high school kids hired by the rink would tell me not to do. They said both of my feet have to be on the ice. A girl was practicing loop turns and power pulls some time ago. The manager of the rink came out to stop her, even though there were just the two of us on the ice. The rink an hour drive away doesn't have this kind of policy, so I'm curious how rare of common it is.
  11. Greetings fellow Planet skaters! How's everybody doing? I started skating two years ago. Before the pandemic I was able to take some group lessons. The only ice rink in the college town I live normally opens from October to March, but last season it was open for only a few weeks. A rink an hour drive away reopened last summer, so I took advantage of that and worked with a coach. This season I have been able to skate more at my local rink (albeit not making as much progress as I had hoped.) I just came back from a trip to Chicago. It was fun not just because it was my first trip out of town (except for the said trips to the rink an hour drive away) since the pandemic. I went to a good pro shop to take of my skates, and skated in three different outdoors venues. If you live anywhere near Chicago, you probably already know about the ice rink at the Millennium Park and the "Ribbon" at the Maggy Daley Park. My favorite is the rink that's part of the Christmas Market at Gallagher Way. Great atmosphere there. You could see a short video clip from the Millennium park and photos from the other two venues here. Anyhow, I just wanted to say hi and share with you the nice outdoor skating experience I just had in Chicago. I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season!
  12. I just found the book "The Second Mark: Courage, Corruption, and the Battle for Olympic Gold" from the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/secondmark00joyg_0) where one can access the whole book. I'm including it in my "to read" list. Do we have separate threads for discussing scoring or PR campaign for Yuzu matters? Both require careful consideration so we could maximize benefit for Yuzu and figure skating as a whole and minimize unintended consequences. I do feel it's long overdue that ISU adopted at least more cameras, which because of organizational inertia probably wouldn't happen unless there are some external pressure. Anyhow, let's continue the discussion without being sidetracked by other discussions.
  13. The fall at 0:28 in this video and the one after his gala performance at 4CC
  14. You're welcome. Jade is highly regarded in Chinese literature. It signifies virtue and treasure.
  15. "帝国" means empire or imperial. "双璧" means two pieces of jade. They symbolize a pair of perfect humans or things. Below are probably two earliest poems in which "雙璧" are seen in Chinese literature ("雙璧" is the traditional-character version of "双璧"). 1. 晉 傅玄 《乘輿馬賦》:“高顛懸日,雙璧象月。” This one was from the Jin Dynasty, which was from 279-420 AD. 2. 唐 駱賓王 《海曲書情》詩:“江濤讓雙璧, 渭水 擲三錢。” This one was from the Tang Dynasty, which was from 620-907 AD (Source: http://www.chinesewords.org/dict/56372-345.html)
  16. He's much more flexible than that.
  17. "seld-dental care?!" I hope you're not a dentist.
  18. Many thanks for your nuanced translation and notes!
  19. I've only started following Yuzu since PC and going to competitions since 2018 ACI. I concur wholeheartedly (except for the teeth part).
  20. I think Yuzu will be more impactful after he retires than he is now. When ISU eventually takes in the notion that Yuzu ice shows are popular beyond measure, I hope they will realize they've gone too far in over emphasizing technical elements and return to what most fans would like to see. I personally would like to see him focus on ice shows before involving himself directly with skating schools, because by coaching he'd have to stick to ISU rule book and judging idiosyncrocies/biases.
  21. Never imagined I'd have fantasies over a bunch of mannequin torsos ... I mean, imagine Yuzu modeling for a sculptor or painter like Michelangelo; imagine a David-like sculpture with Yuzu's physique.
  22. Oh Nobu .... you are a darling. https://twitter.com/FSIgstories/status/1134706671475970048
  23. Change of subject – Sendai is releasing more Yuzu transportation tickets, probably in anticipation for an influx of fans for Fantasy on Ice. I'm going to spend a week in Sendai in August. I hope Sendai city government realizes they could sell a lot more of these tickets and prints more by the time I get there. https://www.kahoku.co.jp/tohokunews/201905/20190528_12023.html
  24. It's particularly challenging even with a decent camera to film at ice shows or galas, partly because of the low-light situation, partly because you can't zoom in much if there are two or more people moving on the ice (especially when they move apart from each other) - unless you just want to film one of them.
