JNats new tech to measure jump is kinda cool.  Anyone know if any of Yuzu performances this year was analyzed?  Helsinki or COR?

who had the highest and furthest jumps? how did Shoma's jumps measure?

This is kind of sad.  A groupon sale for 4CC for front row seats.  I bet they are wishing Yuzu makes a surprise show.

Wait how is this possible. Weren't the all event pass super duper expensive? I almost bought it and I thought it was in the $400 range and thinking that's mighty expensive. I'm glad I didn't end up buying since I moved to Korea instead of headed back to California.

Self divert to a new topic:

So here is the thing: in the past 2 weeks, I officially introduce Yuzu to my parents and send them the videos of Yuzu's programs, both competition and EX from bilibili. The reason is that I saw some fanyu on tweet describe their dads' reaction when watching Swanyu. Driving by curiousity, I did the similar experiment to my parents. And yes, they think the program is beautiful but no dramatic sense.

Then, one day I send them H&L 2017 WC... my mom was really into that.  And just now, I let her to watch Let's Go Crazy in 2016 GPF the most sexy. My mom said she watched it twice and really like his technique and artistic.

My dad also like these programs. And I am still looking for a particular one that can strike my dad's heart :)

Next one shall be Sochi Parisian.

    :9:

I actually introduced my parents to Yuzu before I fell deep into Hanyu fandom. I had his WR setting GPF Seimei saved on my DVR and we watched it. My mom said he seemed very proud (in Chinese it has a connotation of arrogance). That's the only time I've ever tried sharing my Yuzu love. I think my dad was sleeping on the couch so no reaction from him.

To more serious topics, IMO, I believe Yuzu's biggest weakness is his big brain, which is also one of his greatest assets. He is very analytic and self-analytic and he uses his brain a lot. However, that sometimes results in overthinking and I think that's when things go off. I think his mistakes have little to do with technique, which I believe could be quite perfect, and a lot to do with him being able or unable to show that technique off when the time comes. The way he thinks about things in great detail is what helped him develop his technique and learn from mistakes. But it's really easy to fall into overthinking...

I was about to say the same thing. Most of Yuzu's mistakes happen when he gets too into his head or too ahead of himself instead of focusing on one element at the time. He admitted he let his mental focus slip in PC after the (former) combo of doom and ended up botching the 4T-eu-3S.

Technique wise, (other than the flip which will never be a deep inside edge), he's technically perfect. He should be able to land all his jump content every time. But sometimes he overthinks and then disaster happens.

It strange how his brain (tenacity and mental toughness) is such a big reason for his many success, but his mental strength also have drawbacks.

As to other weaknesses, I noticed that he really relies on music and rhythms. I feel like that's why 4L and 4S seem to be mortal enemies. He and Brian, I think, said these jumps have different rhythm so you have to find the right music and beat for it. So if he's off the musical beat or can't hear it too well, it can throw him off. I noticed this with ACI Origin step sequence actually. I think he might have forgot a step or missed a beat because there was a noticeable change in tempo, attack, and commitment halfway through it. Problem with being an audiophile I suppose.

Techniques he needs to work on: his spins. He doesn't practice it enough and it showed at ACI. He used to have such fast, centered spins. Even his spins in PC were not necessarily slow, but not fast either. Since it's slower, he can't get the required number of revolutions and then he drops a level. He is fully capable of level 4 spins every time. He should work on making sure that happens.

Some of his spin positions need work. I love the layback he's incorporating, but it's not ready yet. His Yuzu spin (where he holds his leg over his head), he doesn't have the hip flexibility any more so I think he should drop it. While I've always loved his Bielman spin, I think he should save it for the galas from now on.

He should also work on flexibility more. He's got flexible shoulders and back, but not so much legs.

That's about it for weaknesses I guess. Technically, he's basically the perfect skater. Weakness is sometimes he turns into a head case. Which, is part of why it's agonizing and exciting to be a Yuzu fan. You never know which Yuzu is going to show up.

So cute! Are you going to keep or throw it on the ice when he lands Nessie?

I was there at 18 Olympics, and the screaming got out of control when Yuzu landed all his jumps in the SP. I've never seen a skating competition where the whole arena screamed during the performance. And this sort of screaming is somehow uncontrollable, because everyone instinctively does it. A bit worried if this sort of screaming during the performance may affect his performance.

I was there too and I also screamed in elation after all his jumps were landed in the SP and cried/scream during the choreo sequence in the LP. Such happiness can not be bottled. The rest of his performances, you could hear a pin drop except for successful completion of each jumps.

I don't like the idea of Yuzu fans being more of a cult than an actual FS fan group, but realistically, there's not a whole lot you can do. There are quite a bit of Yuzu fans who are involved only for him, and nothing else. And while we bemoan about it, let's face up to the fact majority of us who do follow FS overall, even we won't follow FS with as much dedication if he stops competing. Personally I might still watch, but going to live competitions might take lower priority than say, normal life obligations. =(

However, there are people who have somewhat converted to being FS fans and also follow other skaters, due to being introduced to FS via Yuzu.

Finally caught up with the whole thread. I'm ridiculously excited to see Yuzuru's Origin. The half of step sequence we got was my favorite part.

I'm not sold on Otonol (however you spell it). It sounds....very....Russian? There's not much variety in the music for me to even picture how he could cut together a more modern take on it. It fits with his dramatic on ice persona though so I'm sure it was still be beautiful. I don't love all of Yuzu's programs. Maybe I won't like this SP. Heck I wasn't sold on Chopin Ballad until I saw it live at the Olympics.

Being in love with 2 out of 3 programs for this season is already more than I could have ever hoped for.

Yokohama is the last stop and it opens until 20 August. So if you live in Kanto area you should visit! But if you live in other part of the country then maybe need to travel.

That's the sad part. I live 30 minutes away and was actually in Yokohama for about an hour on Friday.

It's currently in Yokohama at the Takashimaya Department Store until the 20th of August and that will be the last stop.

ETA Takashimaya Nihonbashi in Tokyo is also holding an exhibition for the 40th anniversary of the NHK Trophy. Yuzu's NDP costume is on display and there's an 8K screen showing some of his performances including, I think, the Requiem performance from the NHK Special Exhibition. There are costumes from other skaters like Mao Asada and Plushenko as well as photos, including pictures of Brian Orser competing! This exhibition will run until the 22nd of August.

I really should check the board more often. Missed them both. sigh...

This is another old thing but anyway I have noticed someone asking the real x monster about Yuzuru 4T3T at GPF 2015. Kurt and British commentator bla blah it was UR. Let me tell you, it was not. Here look at the screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/AtKmTK5

His 4T was short lie 60-70 degree at most, not even up to 90 degrees. It was FINE. At some point, I roll eyes at the commentators but well...

If it's the one I'm thinking of, I think the British commentators were talking about the 3T portion being short not 4T. It's been awhile though.

I'm wondering if it's been discussed regarding what Brian said about scolding Yuzu and Javi and differences. I read an excerpt on Tumblr via twitter via GS(?) about the interactions there which sounded cute with Javi arguing back and crying and making Brian cry.  While scolding Yuzu would result in a stressed out Yuzu so they have talks instead.

I thought there's also some bit about Yuzu being so self sufficient that Brian is almost a little too hands off, which resulted in the Boston fiasco. I don't know it's all second hand.

  15. 3 minutes ago, KatjaThera said:

Since Stephen will possibly be the grand hope of Canada by Beijing, PCS might come his way. Also, I doubt Brian will let him go to seniors without starting to work on the skating aspect. He can debut in seniors at 15, so two years might just be enough to get a reputation.

That said, I do think his biggest problem might be the growth spurt. I also think Yuzu was really lucky because he hit his really early on, so it didn't affect him all that much, and since then, his growth has been slow and steady. I think Stephen does still look like a child, not very tall and very slim and it remains to be seen what body shape he will develop into. Not everyone is naturally slim and/or tall. So I agree that it's too early to say what Stephen will be doing in 4 years. Or even in 8 years. (I had a classmate in high school who was very short and skinny throughout three years of high school, then suddenly shot up to where he was one of the tallest in class, in the last year, so around 18 years old. As far as I know, boys don't stop growing until their mid 20s or so.) It's similar to people getting excited about Trusova doing quads at 14, IMO. It's awesome she can do them now, but it doesn't necessarily mean she'll be able to still do them in a few years.

Thank you! I guess it makes sense... (though to me Yuzu is infinitely more marketable ^_^; )

You can kind of guess by the parents. Anyone know what Stephen's parents look like? Are they super tall?

Yuzu could have gone either way. I think his dad was on the bulkier side since he used to play baseball. He lucked out by looking like his mom who is le tiny.

Also Yuzu hit his growth spurt around 14/15 I believe. He grew a few more inches after Nice but it wasn't drastic. Maybe 2 more inches.

Turning senior at 15 can happen I suppose. He might just be going through a growth spurt at the same time. If I was Brian I would lay off letting Stephen turn senior until after the growth spurt. Or he'd end up hurting in ranking and confidence trying to quad and medal while growing. Just look at the poor Russian ladies that got hit with puberty right when they were getting into the swing of things.

I know we all love our triple flips OUT OF NOWHERE! But you gotta feel bad for the poor Quad Loop. MIA for the last season.

My answer is of course 3 Axel.
